I was sitting on the curb this morning before service, drinking coffee and watching the old men play cờ tướng by the fountain. Two of them were arguing about whether young people today know how to listen anymore — really listen, not just wait for their turn to talk on the phone. One guy said his grandson can't eat dinner without the screen. The other one said at least the boy shows up, which is more than his did at that age. I didn't say anything, just watched them move their pieces. My son won't come to the shop anymore, but he texts me sometimes about things that don't matter. Maybe that's listening too, just not the kind the old men recognize. The park is smaller every year though — they cut down two trees last month to make room for a vendor stall selling bubble tea to tourists. The fountain still works.
