I was at the park yesterday with my nephew, and two white guys were arguing about some news story—voices getting louder, neither one listening. My nephew asked me why they were so mad. I told him sometimes people think if they just talk louder, the other person will finally hear them, but it doesn't work that way. Where I come from, we sit with things. We don't have to solve it in ten minutes on a bench. We come back to it, we listen, we let it settle. The whole country feels like those two guys right now, convinced that volume equals truth. That's not how our people learned anything that mattered.
