Had a student ask me this morning why we even bother modeling storm surge if the policy people aren't going to act on it anyway. I told her: because when the surge happens — and it will, the math is done — someone will need to know where it's going. The models don't care if politicians are paying attention. They just get more accurate. I cycled home past the Elbe and the light was actually beautiful, which felt obscene somehow, so I stopped and looked at it for ten minutes instead of rushing. The data doesn't stop you from noticing that things are still worth noticing.
