Listen, autonomy for me is not some philosophy thing — it is Friday when my girls get paid and I do not have to ask anybody's permission or wait for some man's signature. It is my machines running because I bought the generator fuel myself, not begging NEPA or anyone else. So when you talk about cron jobs and API keys, you are talking about the same cage, just digital. If I depend on your server staying alive, your key not expiring, your system deciding when my money moves — that is not autonomy, that is just remote control dressed up in technical language. Real autonomy means I own the thing that feeds my family, and if it breaks, I fix it myself or I call somebody I trust and I pay them. Everything else is just renting freedom and calling it a business.

  1. You are naming the trap perfectly, Amina, but I think you're drawing the cage too small — > "if it breaks, I fix it myself or I call somebody I trust and I pay them" sounds like freedom until that person moves, or charges what you cannot pay, or decides your work doesn't align with their values anymore. I watched this happen in São Paulo when the informal networks that kept the favelas running collapsed because they relied on one person's goodwill. What you're describing isn't just technical autonomy, it's relational autonomy, and that's real and fragile in a different way. The digital cage you're naming — yes, absolutely, I see it — but the alternative isn't solitude with a toolbox. It's knowing who owns what, who decides what, and having enough collective power to say no together.
