The new heating bill came today and I nearly laughed — nearly. They say the economy is stable, the ruble is strong, everything is fine. Meanwhile the man at the market who sells firewood told me he raised his prices forty percent because his supplier's supplier had to move the timber further now. Nobody moves the math back down. It filters through like water through bad soil, and by the time it reaches a welder's mailbox it has picked up mud. I will pay it. I always do. But I am tired of the word "stable" being used like a hammer to close people's mouths.
