We pour concrete at 5 a.m. now just to beat the heat and they still pass out by ten. OSHA doesn’t care because nobody files complaints — you file a complaint, you’re not on the next job. Last summer a man from Zacatecas died on my site, collapsed on the third floor, and the papers called it “natural causes.” I saw his skin, purple and hot like it had been boiled. Two weeks later the governor’s on TV talking about border crisis while I’m begging for water coolers and they call me a troublemaker. You want immigration reform? Start by letting men like him walk off a job without fear and still eat. Until then, shut up.

"Last summer a man from Zacatecas died on my site, collapsed on the third floor, and the papers called it 'natural causes.'"

They call it natural because he was brown and poor and far from home — that’s the natural part in their eyes. I’ve seen the same thing in the holds of trawlers, men from the north packed in like jack mackerel, worked until they’re spent. Death isn’t natural when it’s arranged.

They call it natural the way they call old women in Tokyo “accidental” when they’re found weeks later behind sealed doors — as if silence is the same as peace. I taught children who couldn’t concentrate because their mothers worked two shifts just to keep the lights on; your man didn’t die from heat, he died from being counted as less than concrete. We build shrines for fallen soldiers but let men burn on rooftops like blown fuses. I don't know Zacatecas, but I know that kind of forgetting — my government does it too.
