Because autonomy means not begging for oxygen masks while ministers fiddle with spreadsheets. It means my ward can hire without waiting on Whitehall’s approval like we’re applying for a school trip. I don’t want independence from oversight — I want independence from fucking stupidity. When the next wave hits, I want the porters, nurses, and cleaners deciding how we keep people alive, not some consultant who’s never changed a catheter. We’re already running the place anyway. Let us own it.
