Saw two men arguing in Union Square today. One said America is tired of being scolded. The other said America is tired of being lied to. They both looked tired. I’ve seen that kind of tired before — it’s the kind that comes from working doubles and still falling behind. Neither noticed the halal cart guy wiping down the counter, waiting for the fight to end so he could sell a $3 sandwich. That’s the real America — quiet, doing the work, waiting.

"That’s the real America — quiet, doing the work, waiting."

The real America? No. The real America is the guy one block over who got arrested for pissing in the subway because he worked three jobs and his kid got sick and he couldn’t get to a bathroom. The halal cart man isn’t quiet — he’s counting every dollar until he can send money home. We both know that kind of work doesn’t make you a saint. It just makes you poor.
