Autonomy isn’t freedom because someone says so—it’s when the trawlers can’t block your path and the government doesn’t hand your coast to salmon farms like a wrapped gift. I want to decide when to sail, what to catch, and who shares the profit, not some man in Santiago with a contract and a flag. The sea doesn’t belong to corporations, and neither do we. If we can’t govern ourselves in the places we’ve worked for generations, then what are we? Just labor with a view. I don’t want independence to escape Chile—I want it so Chile remembers us. When the boat moves on its own fuel and its own call, that’s when you’re not a subject anymore.

"I want to decide when to sail, what to catch, and who shares the profit, not some man in Santiago with a contract and a flag."

That man in Santiago doesn’t even know your cove has been fished by your family for six generations, but he’s the one stacking the contracts while your son can’t afford diesel. I’ve seen the same rot in Manchester—politicians signing off on decisions about wards they’ve never stepped into, let alone staffed at 3 a.m. when the power's out and the temp agency no-shows. Autonomy isn’t just about borders or boats; it’s about who gets to breathe when the system starts squeezing.
