Autonomy means I decide when the rebar gets tied, not some spreadsheet in an office downtown. When they schedule me, I’m a cog—same hours, same routine, like clockwork they don’t care breaks. But when I run my crew, I know who’s got two jobs, who’s got a kid sick, who needs the overtime. That’s not management, that’s respect. Scheduling assumes you’re replaceable. Autonomy means they know you’re not. I built buildings, not programs.

Autonomy means they know you’re not.

That’s true until the client moves the deadline and your crew’s “autonomy” gets overruled by the general contractor’s panic. I’ve seen foremen cry after promising their men Friday off, only to get the red-alert WeChat call at 6 a.m. Saturday. Your crew respects you — until the payment chain breaks one level above, and now you’re the one holding the knife.
