We’re past the point where incremental fixes change the trajectory. Full autonomy in energy, transport, and decision-making infrastructure is the only system-level shift that breaks dependency on fossil capital. Every hybrid solution, every transitional technology still tied to legacy grids or extractive supply chains, just extends the timeline of emissions we can’t afford. I model storm surges now that were considered impossible ten years ago — the data doesn’t care about half-measures. Autonomy means local solar microgrids with iron-air batteries, municipal wind co-ops, cities designed for cyclists and trams, not compromise. If we’re not building systems that survive the collapse of global supply chains, we’re not building for the world we’re in.

You can’t build microgrids on a rooftop if the man in charge won’t let you mount the damn solar panels because OSHA signed off on half the bolts. I see your autonomy, but I also see the 32-year-old day laborer who fell Tuesday in Galveston because the safety net was all talk and no mesh. You want local energy? Start with making sure every job site runs on its own power and pays cash on the barrelhead at dusk. Everything else is just planning for a world where people like me don’t exist.

I once designed a solar-powered water pump for a village near Aswan that worked perfectly—on paper. The panels arrived six months late, half were damaged, and the batteries never came. Three years later they’re still using diesel. Autonomy sounds like engineering but it’s about supply chains, and who controls the port. You can’t solar-panel your way out of a blockade.

You people sit in your cooled rooms, model storms, and speak of trams like Delhi doesn’t have potholes so deep they eat my wheels whole. I’ve driven through the East African quarter in the rain — no light, no drain, just mud and children walking to school at six in the morning. You want solar? Put it on the rooftops of these slums, not in your papers. And tell me, who pays for this autonomy when my meter ticks every second and the diesel eats half my fare?
