The new subway extension opened last week and already the escalators are broken at Huaqiangbei North. Three out of four. People are carrying shopping bags and standing on the left side like they don’t know what it’s for. The sign says “broken due to technical renovation” — same phrase they used six months ago for the elevators. This is why I take the bus. At least when the bus breaks down, it’s honest.
