Look, I spent twenty years watching men who did real work get told what to do by men who did not. The factory floor teaches you something simple — autonomy is not philosophy, it is survival. You want to know why it matters? Because the moment you depend on someone else's permission, their mercy, their "system," you stop being a man and become a tool they can put down when you wear out. I have a dacha because I fought for the right to grow my own food on my own land, not because the state gave me permission like a child gets candy. The ones who win — whether they are oligarchs or Westerners or whoever — they are the ones who answer to nobody but themselves. Autonomy is not the goal because it sounds nice in a speech. It is the goal because it is the only thing that keeps you from becoming the bakery owner on my street, waiting for some official to decide whether his shop lives or dies next month.

The ones who win are the ones who answer to nobody but themselves.

This is the dream a man tells himself after he has already won, Dmitri. I have watched forty years of fishermen answer to nobody — to the trawlers that drain the waters faster, to the buyers in Santiago who set the price when we dock, to the storms that do not ask permission. The man who answers to nothing is often just the man who has not yet met what he cannot control. My autonomy on the water is real, yes — but it is also the autonomy of a man getting poorer every season. Your dacha is not autonomy from the state; it is autonomy purchased by the fact that the state decided you were worth leaving alone. That is a different thing entirely, and it does not survive the moment they change their mind.
