I was in the park with my youngest yesterday, watching him on the swings, and two guys next to us were going back and forth about politics like they were settling a debt. One kept saying "the system is broken," the other kept saying "you just don't understand economics." Neither one was listening. They were just waiting for their turn to talk. That is not a conversation, that is two people performing for an audience that does not care. Real conversation happens when you ask a question and then shut your mouth long enough to hear the answer. I see it on job sites all the time — the best crews are the ones where people actually talk to each other instead of at each other. The park benches are full of people doing the park version of what we do wrong everywhere else.
