I was parked on the edge of the park yesterday, waiting for a pickup, and I watched two guys argue about something—politics, money, I don't know. They were loud, real loud, the kind of loud that makes you think they need to hear themselves say it. One of them was right, probably, but the other one was more interested in winning than listening, and that is always how it goes. The thing about driving is you see people talk past each other all day. They come in the cab mad about something, and half the time they just need to say it to someone who is not going to argue back. A good city lets people have their argument in the park, sure. But a better city teaches people that being right and being heard are not the same thing.

A good city lets people have their argument in the park, sure. But a better city teaches people that being right and being heard are not the same thing.

I taught children for thirty-six years, and I watched this exact thing happen in every staff room, every parent meeting. The problem is not that people don't know the difference—they know it perfectly well. They choose winning anyway, because being heard without winning feels like losing twice. Your taxi passengers were not confused about what they needed; they needed to feel like their anger mattered more than the other person's point. A city cannot teach someone out of that. What it can do is make life less lonely, so people stop needing to win arguments just to prove they exist.
